I’ve jumped headfirst into learning Basque this past month, after writing this post about online resources for learning Euskara. I joined the weekly Basque classes at the Basque Cultural Center, I listen to a Basque for Dummies CD in my car everywhere I go, I use a...

25 Resources for Learning Euskara Online

Can you believe it’s practically March already?

How are your New Year’s Resolutions going?

In case your goal for 2019 was to learn Euskara, the Basque language, I want to share some resources to help with that. If you haven’t gotten too far in your learning so far in 2019, no shame! There’s always time to start once you make the commitment.

In doing research for this post, I’ve come to discover how many online resources there are for learning Basque. People have been telling me for years that there really are no excuses to not learn Basque with the internet at our fingertips, and I’m starting to believe them.

Basque Movies to Watch on Netflix

They say a great way to learn a language is to watch movies. Immerse yourself in that language and get the hang of it.

Unfortunately in the United States, there aren’t too many places to immerse yourself in Euskara and even fewer opportunities to see movies in Euskara. But what do most of us have right at home? Netflix.

Euskara Thriving in the Basque Country with Euskaraldia

A very interesting initiative started last Friday in the Basque Country.

While Basques in the U.S. were doing our Black Friday shopping, some Basques in the Basque Country were starting their days with an initiative called Euskaraldia.

Euskaraldia is a project in which people in all 7 provinces in the Basque Country are encouraged to speak more Euskara, the Basque language, over an 11-day period.

Beginning November 23rd and ending on December 3rd, Euskaraldia has seen thousands of participants sign up on their website. People either commit to being an Euskara speaker, Ahobizi, or an Euskara listener, Bellariprest, during these 11 days.

How Many People in the Basque Country Actually Speak Euskara?

How Many People in the Basque Country Actually Speak Euskara?

I recently read an interesting study from 2016 about the prevalence of Euskara in the Basque Country across all 7 provinces.

The study was funded by Eusko Jaurlaritza (the Basque Government), Euskarabidea (Government of Navarra), and Euskararen Erakunde Publikoa (the Public Office of Euskara).

I’ve laid out the main findings of the study in this infographic. Feel free to share it with your friends on social media!
