Common Questions About Learning Euskera, the Basque Language

Got questions about learning Basque? As a beginner’s Euskera student and as someone who shares my language learning journey on YouTube, I get a lot of questions about the Basque language. Some people want to know if it’s hard to learn, some ask how they can start learning, and others ask why bother learning it at all.

Improve Your Euskera by Watching Basque TV

I’ve been loving watching Goenkale, a Basque soap opera, on EITB. Fun 20-minute episodes are an easy and interesting way to improve my Euskera comprehension all the way from California. Debunking Myths About the Basque People

Today we’re talking stereotypes! I asked Hella Basque’s Instagram follows what are the things that people commonly get wrong about Basques and the Basque Country. In this video, I compiled their responses with the misconceptions, myths, and stereotypes people have about the Basque Country.

How to Make a Picon Punch

How to Make a Picon Punch

Aita recently shared his piperade recipe with us, and now he wants to show you how he mixes a Picon Punch.

This classic Basque cocktail of the American West is popular with Basque Americans but can’t be found in bars in the Basque Country. That’s because it was invented by Basque immigrants in the United States. It’s a staple at old Basque boardinghouse bars in California and Nevada.

To make this cocktail, Amer Picon is combined with soda water, grenadine, and a splash of brandy on top. I hope you enjoy this video’s virtual happy hour with Aita.

I spent a day watching movies in Euskera, the Basque language, and here is my honest review of them.

In this video, I talk about Handia / The Giant, Errementari / The Blacksmith and the Devil, and Loreak / Flowers. The first two are currently on Netflix US and the last is on Amazon Prime Video.

Virtual Picnic: Basques Breaking Barriers

Virtual Picnic: Basques Breaking Barriers

The Chino Basque Club hosted the first-ever Virtual Basque Picnic. In the face of this global pandemic, many of the annual Basque gatherings, both here in the United States, and in Euskal Herria, were cancelled or scaled-back for COVID19 safety reasons. These picnics and bestas have been the cornerstone of Basque cultural life for generations— so they’ve been sorely missed by many this year.

But the Chino Basque Club saw an opportunity where others did not: Why couldn’t a Basque picnic be a virtual one?

And, it turns out, there’s absolutely ZERO reason why a Basque picnic cannot be held online!

When I moved away for college, I left behind my Basque American community and felt very disconnected from my Basque identity. An isolation I imagine many in the diaspora may feel at one point or another.

My hope is that Hella Basque can help Basques in the diaspora feel more connected to their heritage, whether or not they have physical ties to a Basque community.
