Can you believe it’s practically March already?
How are your New Year’s Resolutions going?
In case your goal for 2019 was to learn Euskara, the Basque language, I want to share some resources to help with that. If you haven’t gotten too far in your learning so far in 2019, no shame! There’s always time to start once you make the commitment.
In doing research for this post, I’ve come to discover how many online resources there are for learning Basque. People have been telling me for years that there really are no excuses to not learn Basque with the internet at our fingertips, and I’m starting to believe them.

The Basque language, Euskara, is an endlessly fascinating subject.
Just as I’ve been obsessed with my Basque heritage since childhood, so have I been strangely obsessed with Napoleon Bonaparte.
So when these two interests of mine slightly overlap, I’m all over it.
But if you’re not a big fan of Napoleon, fair enough. He was kind of awful.
This story is really about his nephew anyway.
Prince Louis-Lucien Bonaparte, son of Napoleon’s brother Lucien, spent much of his life studying and documenting the dialects of the Basque language in the 19th century.

Today is the International Day of the Basque Language. Every year on December 3rd, Euskara is celebrated all around the world.
The date for this holiday was established in 1948 by Eusko Ikaskuntza, the Society for Basque Studies. They chose December 3rd because it’s the feast day of Saint Francis Xavier, co-patron saint of the Basque province of Nafarroa (along with San Fermín).

A very interesting initiative started last Friday in the Basque Country.
While Basques in the U.S. were doing our Black Friday shopping, some Basques in the Basque Country were starting their days with an initiative called Euskaraldia.
Euskaraldia is a project in which people in all 7 provinces in the Basque Country are encouraged to speak more Euskara, the Basque language, over an 11-day period.
Beginning November 23rd and ending on December 3rd, Euskaraldia has seen thousands of participants sign up on their website. People either commit to being an Euskara speaker, Ahobizi, or an Euskara listener, Bellariprest, during these 11 days.

I recently read an interesting study from 2016 about the prevalence of Euskara in the Basque Country across all 7 provinces.
The study was funded by Eusko Jaurlaritza (the Basque Government), Euskarabidea (Government of Navarra), and Euskararen Erakunde Publikoa (the Public Office of Euskara).
I’ve laid out the main findings of the study in this infographic. Feel free to share it with your friends on social media!
