It’s rare to find Basque movies with English subtitles, so I wanted to share with you what movies from the Basque Country are available for streaming in the United States.
I spent a day watching movies in Euskera, the Basque language, and here is my honest review of them.
In this video, I talk about Handia / The Giant, Errementari / The Blacksmith and the Devil, and Loreak / Flowers. The first two are currently on Netflix US and the last is on Amazon Prime Video.
TLDR: Handia is a popular award-winning film that I found to be super dull and depressing. Errementari is a fun action-packed movie based on Basque mythology – recommend to those who like dark and fantastical storylines. Loreak is an artsy film that follows a quiet mystery set in modern-day Basque Country that speaks to what happens when the mundane is interrupted.
I wanted there to be a resource on YouTube for anyone searching about Basque culture to learn more about it, so I hope this video is helpful and interesting.
